Chapter 17

“What are you laughing at? This is not funny! Tell him, I’m not his mate. I’m just someone who was stranded on his land and I’m trying to find a way home.”

Kharos started speaking to the male, and his tone was urgent to say the least.

The male looked at her when Kharos stopped talking. “Are you sure? He’s not a bad male. He’ll keep you fed, and fatten you up a little since you’re so underfed, and you can help him tend the lichea. It’s not a bad offer.”

“What is a lichea? You know what? No! It doesn’t matter! I’m not his mate, and I’m not quite sure where he got that idea, but it’s completely inaccurate. And I am certainly not underfed!”

“Tall, scaled creatures, long legs, predator-like head, warble hanging from here,” the male said, brushing his own throat. “You can’t have missed them if you’ve spent any time with him; he raises them.”

“Oh! The lumpy ostriches. Yeah, I saw them. They were frightening. I just want to go home.”

“Frightening? They wouldn’t hurt anyone unless they felt threatened. We breed them for food.”

Kharos started talking again.

The male answered Kharos, then spoke to her again. “He insists he’s fed you, cleaned you, saved you from the clawfors, and has proven himself a good mate. You’ll accept him. It is decided.”

“No, the hell I will not!” Phrosy said, slapping at Kharos’s hands until he hesitantly put her down with a very unhappy expression. “If I accepted anyone it would be that idiot pirate that caused me to be here in the first place,” she paused to consider for a brief moment before picking up where she left off, “or I’d just shoot him, haven’t decided, but that’s beside the point. I’m not this Kharos’s mate. I can’t be, because I’m leaving. Please tell him that I am grateful, I am so appreciative of his kindness, but I have a life on a whole other planet I’m anxious to get back to.”

“He’s not going to be happy.”

Phrosy lifted her hands in the air at about shoulder level as though to say, ‘what do you want me to do?’.

With a sigh the male started repeating to Kharos what Phrosy had just said.

After a heated back and forth, Kharos stormed off, shouting unintelligibly with every step he took.

“That went well,” she muttered.

“No, actually it didn’t. He said you owe him compensation for the resources he shared with you, and for the work he lost having to chase after you to ensure your welfare while he was falsely under the impression you agreed to be his mate. He’s offended and expects to have reparation made to him.”

“I never said I was his mate!”

“You have sex with a male, it’s pretty much a given you belong to him. Unless sex is your business. In which case, you’re not very good at plying your trade.”

“It wasn’t my fault! He did something to make me act like I wouldn’t normally act!”

“Then you’re his mate. If you accepted him there’s nothing we can do unless he chooses to refuse you.
